Your Credit Report Is Free—Find Errors Before They Cost You
A wrong balance, unfamiliar account or false late payment can affect important financial decisions. Check the official source before paying anyone to “fix” your credit.

Why drivers should care
Your credit report can affect whether you qualify for financing and the terms you receive. An error you did not make may still cost you time or money until it is corrected. You can currently request free online credit reports every week from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion through the official site.
Three actions you can take today
- Request all three reports safely. Type AnnualCreditReport.com yourself; avoid ads and look-alike sites. Download each report and store it in a protected folder.
- Review five items. Check your name and addresses, accounts, balances and limits, payment status or collections, and inquiries you do not recognize.
- Dispute errors with evidence. Contact both the credit reporting company and the business that supplied the information. Explain exactly what is wrong, attach copies—not originals—of supporting documents, and save confirmation numbers and dates.
Simple example
Your card balance is $1,200, but the report shows $12,000. That is a $10,800 error. Correcting it does not guarantee a particular score increase, but it gives future lenders accurate information instead of a balance ten times too high.
Do not pay for an impossible promise
A company cannot legally remove accurate, current negative information merely because you paid it. You have the right to dispute genuine errors yourself for free. Be suspicious of anyone demanding upfront payment or promising a guaranteed score increase.
